Reminder: Funds Still Available for Downtown Revitalization Building and Facade Improvements Program

Last Updated 9/18/2024

Focus of Program

The City of Columbus, in partnership with the Northeast Nebraska Economic Development District (NENEDD), has funds remaining in the Downtown Revitalization Building and Facade Improvements Program aimed at enhancing the downtown area. The initiative focuses on upgrading buildings to meet city code requirements and improving facades, making the properties safer for tenants and visitors while restoring the historical and architectural character of the area.

The program, funded through a combination of grant dollars and matching private funds, seeks to restore, renovate, replace, or reconstruct building exteriors, signage, and facades in the downtown district. By improving the quality and appearance of these properties, the program aims to promote economic growth and ensure the long-term sustainability of downtown Columbus.

Eligible Applicants

Eligible applicants include property owners and tenants within the designated downtown district, spanning 11th, 12th, 13th, and 14th Streets between 22nd Avenue and 30th Avenue. Maximum grant requests can reach up to $30,000, with a required 1:1 matching contribution. For example, a $1,000 request would require $500 in private matching funds and $500 in grant funds. Improvements must receive approval from the City of Columbus' Downtown Business Improvement District Board, followed by final approval from the Columbus City Council.

“The revitalization program is an excellent opportunity for downtown property owners to enhance their buildings and contribute to the overall beautification of the area. It's a win for business owners, tenants, and the community," said Jean Van Iperen, City of Columbus Planning and Economic Development Coordinator.

Eligible Improvements

Eligible improvements include awnings, signage, exterior lighting, windows, doors, restoration of original architectural features, and ADA-compliant building upgrades. Additional improvements visible from the street that enhance the appearance of the buildings may also qualify, including the inclusion of professional design fees and necessary city permits. Notably, painting is only eligible in combination with other improvements, such as window replacement or facade restoration for historic preservation.

The program is funded by a Community Development Block Grant through the Downtown Revitalization Program, reflecting the city's commitment to ensuring the vibrancy and attractiveness of its downtown.

Those interested in applying or learning more about the program can find detailed information and the application on the City of Columbus website here.

This program is another step in the city’s ongoing efforts to preserve and enhance its historic downtown, providing opportunities for local businesses to thrive while maintaining the area’s unique charm.
